Why Do I See You in Everything?

Verbunden durch ihre Freundschaft und die Olivenbäume, die sie zurücklassen mussten, enthüllen zwei syrische Freunde im Exil die gemeinsam erfahrenen Mechanismen der Gewalt, die sich von der Diktatur bis in die Demokratie erstrecken. Als einer von ihnen nach dem Sturz Assads in die Heimat zurückkehrt, um Syriens Neubeginn zu filmen, hält seine Kamera einen neuen Kreislauf der Gewalt fest – während die Zuneigung füreinander als Akt des Widerstands fortbesteht.

“For me, queerness is not limited to identity or desire; it is a way of looking. It is a refusal of the hierarchies that determine which bodies deserve intimacy, which gestures are permitted, and which images become imaginable. I chose to work with two Arab men because their bodies have become some of the most politicized and dehumanized images of our time. They are repeatedly framed through war, migration, fear, and violence. I wanted to reclaim another image from within that reality - not by denying violence, but by allowing tenderness to become equally visible.”

“Every image in this film emerged from questions that often kept me awake at night. How do we witness violence without reproducing it? How do we protect dignity while refusing invisibility? Showing a victim’s body was never an image I sought. Instead, when violence became overwhelming, the film turned toward breath, duration, touch, silence, and the fragile gestures that continue to affirm life. The camera became careful, hesitant, and deeply aware of its own responsibility.”
